Chiang Mai – Some Hostel – Thailand
Our room is large and spacious. We have a double bed and a single bed at our disposal, one of which we sleep on, the other houses Anna’s belongings. There is a small enclave where there sits a knee high coffee table with two chairs at either end. Just past is the entrance to a pokey bathroom. The room is multi leveled, with a step in the enclave between the bedroom and the bathroom. The walls are stained with the sweat of many a traveler before us which makes the walls range in color from an off white to a streaky brown. The floor has a plastic Asian cartoon character printed cover all over it that has been cut by hand to fit the varying heights of the room. It is not stuck down and as you walk from one end of the room to the other, it’s easy to have it flick up underneath your feet. There are three power points, which is particularly uncommon for a budget room such as this, and we are making full use of the utilities by charging both camera battery as well as iPod speakers, whilst the fan is running from the third. The power outlets are probably not safe, and one takes particular caution to keep fingers clear when pressing the cord into the outlet, made even more dangerous by the precarious adaptors that sort of fit the appliances that we have with us. With each time a pop and a spark flies out of the socket, but it’s funny how you get used to it after a while. The fan rotates about 120 degrees from left to right which is too much when you have it in the corner, so we have managed to stop it from rotating at all. This way it blows constantly towards our bed. We have worked out over the last few months that actually the lower speed setting is best because it’s not so loud, and too much air can get annoying in the middle of the night. Our bed is of foam mattress, and we have gotten used to either this or completely hard. It seems springed mattresses are too expensive to put into the types of rooms we are looking for. We have just come back from the market, laden with beer and Lychees. The red peel is starting to cover the floor beneath us, but we find that the fruit is so moreish, and will no doubt get through the whole bunch tonight even though we planned on saving some for tomorrow. The frogs are making strange noises, and we are watching the geckos chase moths behind the fly wire above our bed.
